A new artist album by Armin van Buuren has been much anticipated for some time now and I must say I was greatly impressed. Armin’s album preceding Intense was Mirage which was very different from his previous albums and this one again is different so it is clear that Armin is progressing and changing musically which I believe any good artist should do.

In my personal opinion and for the purposes of this blog entry, I see a few trends in the type of tracks that Armin has put into this album; there are three broad areas I will describe:

• More mainstream and even pop-like sounds are featured in tracks like ‘Turn This Love Around’, ‘Alone’, and the lead single ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ featuring Trevor Guthrie. These tracks have a softer sound with easy vocals to enjoy and to sing along to. Although these type of tracks aren’t my favourites from the album, what I like about them is they show that Armin is delving into different sounds as an artist. What I really appreciate about them is that they invite listeners who may not necessarily have heard of or wanted to listen to Armin van Buuren before. This is important as it is one of the avenues by which people come to find out about and fall in love with trance. One of these tracks which I do like is the W&W remix of ‘This Is What It Feels Like’, which you can listen to here.

• Several tracks on the album show that Armin is not forgetting the trance roots whence he came. These include ‘Last Stop Before Heaven’, ‘Who’s Afraid Of 138?!’ and ‘Humming The Lights’ (which is a track performed under Armin’s alter-ego ‘Gaia’). These tracks have a true trance sound which many fans know and love Armin for.

• A large bulk of the remaining tracks are a concoction of the mainstream and trance sounds, with maybe some progressive house-y sounds in there as well, I personally LOVE these which include ‘Waiting For The Night’,  ‘Beautiful Life’, ‘Won’t Let You Go’, and ‘Forever Is Ours’.

MY THREE FAVOURITE TRACKS FROM THIS ALBUM:
(not in any particular order)

• ‘Love Never Came’ featuring Richard Bedford

◦ I think what stood out on this track for me the most are Richard Bedford’s vocals. He has featured on numerous tracks for numerous artists and with each one I fall in love with it. His voice is just so powerful and strong that combined with the lyrics written for this track it is extremely moving… one of those to belt out.

• ‘Intense’ featuring Miri Ben-Ari

◦ What I enjoyed so much about this song is both Armin’s creativity shining through and the epic sound he always brings. Armin decided to blend a classical violin with trance and I think that his incredible skill shines through in this track to make the collaboration work perfectly. I also love that epic feel that this track has, it almost feels as if it should be the score for the most important scene of an saga movie like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

◦ See it below where Armin is playing it with a live orchestra at a concern celebrating the inauguration of the new King of the Netherlands (Armin’s home country).

• ‘Who’s Afraid of 138?!’

◦ Everything about this track is awesome to me. Armin has named this track after his concept to test the demand for harder and faster trance. This ‘Who’s Afraid of 138?!’ concept refers to the beats per minute of the these harder and faster tracks, most of them being at 138bpm or faster. Armin is asking us who is afraid of 138 or more importantly who ISN’T! This concept is a reminder of the true sound of trance, which is this uplifting and high-energy sound. This track shows us what exactly that sound is, that although new sounds are good we shouldn’t forget where trance came from, and why we SHOULDN’T be afraid of 138!!

Overall I think this new artist album by Armin is excellent as it shows that he is both progressing as an artist experimenting with new sounds while staying true to what his original fans first fell in love with him for. I think it takes great discipline and skill as to accomplish that, and this album outlines quite clearly the talent that Armin has which has made him the number 1 DJ in the world. I would highly recommend trance fans buying this album either off iTunes, Armada Music, or BeatPort.

This mix has been mastered by the legend Scott Bond and when listening to it we understand exactly why he has earned that title of legend. To me this mix is the kind that is great to listen to on a long drive, it is packed full of uplifting tunes, soaring melodies and soothing vocals. Although this is an uplifting trance mix there is great variety in the tracks and their nature, but a major theme throughout this mix is that dreamy and euphoric sound. It’s perfect for those of us that love trance in its purest form!

Throughout last year, I have been fortunate enough to receive some exceptional trance music from a whole host of different producers and labels around the globe. The music scene moves fast and I feel that some of these artists and producers sometimes do not receive the credit and airplay that they rightly deserve.

I’m not a follower of the latest trend and have always been a believer in two types of music, good or bad. I assess on whether the tune is firstly any good and secondly, did it stand out to me – who made it, what label it is on or if another DJ has been playing it out is irrelevant.

I have created a 3 hour mix which I would consider to be a tapestry of trance. “REBOOTED Vol.01″ is first in a series of cutting edge, uplifting trance. It is a mix woven with care and attention, containing the finest ingredients to have graced my ears in 2012. This should not to be perceived as a “Best of 2012″ or “An End of Year 2012″ mix but more of an extended online mix album, crafted with that same degree of quality.

[MaRLo]

After an awesome set by MS54, MaRLo came out all guns blazing! He picked the pace right up, playing harder and faster music. Later in the night this is generally the trend, and MaRLo delivered the crowd with a big kick to keep them going well into the early hours of the morning. A few favourites of mine from his set were his latest original ‘’, his remix of Christian Burn’s song ‘Perfectly’ which I think has an absolutely incredible vibe, and finally Beat Service’s remix of ‘Nothing Without Me’, a track from Markus Schulz’s latest album; this is one to sing along to as loud as possible.

 

[Later in the night]
I actually had the pleasure of meeting Shane himself, which was extremely exciting for me! Again it was great to get an insight into the DJs creating trance and I found Shane to be very humble, down to earth and up for having a laugh (as you can see in the photo below!) which was extremely refreshing. Surprisingly enough this opportunity came about as the company running this event (Evolution Trance Events), sold tickets for a meet & greet which I couldn’t pass up. Evolution is a relatively new company only being formed later on in 2012, but I think this is an excellent option and hope they provide this at future events!

So instead of my usual review I’ve chosen to do a shorter post outlining the 3 best and 3 worst aspects of my day at the recent Future Music Festival!

BEST

Hardwell: This guy is only so young but he was definitely the shining light of my day! He played a set full of energy, great tracks and although he predominantly plays house he threw in a few unexpected trance tracks! My favourite of his set was Invasion by W&W which is by now a trance classic!

Flemington Racecourse: Although there’s a great vibe present at most summer festivals, for me there’s something about Flemington that is just magic. It could be due to the freshly cut grass or the immaculate flora & fauna that the racecourse keeps, but either way this place adds that fun and jovial element to the festival that concrete-covered venues just don’t have.

The lineup as a whole: Every year it seems that Future Entertainment bring this festival to another level. This year saw something amazing for a fan of almost any genre! The trance acts for this year were some of the best I’ve seen at recent festivals and consisted of: TyDi, Super8 & Tab, Ben Gold, Andy Moor, W&W and Cosmic Gate.

WORST

The volume at the trance stage: Unfortunately this year the Wake Your Mind stage hosting all of the trance artists at this year’s event was moved to an outside area; previously being in a large tent towards the back of the festival. This stage was not only outside but it was marginally smaller. Smaller stage = smaller speakers = less sound…. this greatly disappointed me as I couldn’t hear the music properly unless I pushed far into the thick crowd!

The hot weather: This one isn’t the organiser’s fault. Unfortunately Melbourne’s weather is known to be extremely volatile and crazy, so our city decided that the day of the event would be not only hot, but sticky as well. This makes for one messy and sweaty festival! But there isn’t much that can be done about this… it’s all part of the experience… for better or for worse!

Lack of water: on a hot day and being surrounded by people on all sides, dancing non-stop for 10 hours straight can really work up a thirst. One problem I faced was that it was very difficult to buy WATER at the event. Organisers allowed the sale of water only at designated stations (where the lines were massive), and had not permitted food sellers to sell water. My group of friends and I were forced to buy other soft drinks, either drink or empty out the contents and then refill the bottles from the taps. This wasn’t a huge issue but it was rather inconvenient.

To celebrate the coming of 2013, we have a super uplifting 2 and a half hour mix from DJ Ravemaster. Much like our last mix in 2012, Renaissance is full of beautiful melodies, and incredible synths, what trance music is all about.

We decided to entitle this mix as Renaissance because of this new age, this new world we are shifting into. Many are calling it the golden age, as we go through this apocalypse. I use apocalypse in its original meaning, to uncover, to reveal, to become more aware.

I hope this mix will inspire you to be the new world you want to see, the world of love, in this age of love.
